Tasman champs survive setback to win title
Tasman sharemilkers Warric and Rachel Johnson haven't let the 2006 milk payout crash put them out of business.
They include the New Zealand Sharemilker/Equity Farmer of the Year, New Zealand Farm Manager of the Year and New Zealand Dairy Trainee of the Year competitions.

National convenor Chris Keeping says organisers are hopeful of similar numbers to the 2014 awards, when 572 entered the three competitions. "One of our key messages this year will be to encourage people to enter so they are better positioned to capitalise on any opportunities that may arise from a forecast period of lower milk payout.
"We recommend people use the entry process to do some strategic planning for their business and career, and the judging process to fine tune their budget. The judges may also identify opportunities where other gains can be made."
Keeping says the "phenomenal" response to the dairy trainee competition, with nearly 300 entries received in 2014, has led to some changes particularly around the timing of entries.
The trainee competition began in 2008 with just over 100 entries received and grew to 292 entries in 2014.
"The benefits are obvious, but the best way a new entrant in the dairy industry can progress their career is by entering the Dairy Industry Awards. It's a no-brainer really and the word must be spreading. The competition is attracting those focused and determined to do a great job on-farm, to raise their reputation and to move up to the next position.
"We haven't had a former dairy trainee winner claim the sharemilker/equity farmer title yet – but it is only a matter of time. The speed at which some are progressing in the industry is impressive."
The awards are supported by national sponsors Westpac, DairyNZ, Ecolab, Federated Farmers, Fonterra, Honda Motorcycles NZ, LIC, Meridian Energy, Ravensdown, RD1 and Triplejump, along with industry partner Primary ITO.
Entrants first compete in one of 11 regional competitions held around the country, with all regional winners progressing to a national final.
