Shrinking minority

Written by

This old mutt suggests that if the polls are correct in picking a change of government at the election, then the farmer voice in Parliament is likely to get even smaller.

Labour’s only real ag spokesman will be Damien O’Connor, the Greens’ token lifestyle blocker from the Wairarapa is unlikely to get in in on current polling and NZ First’s sole farming voice would be former MIE mouthpiece Mark Patterson. Meanwhile, if the Nats lose it is likely the high-ranking list MP farmer David Carter will quit, Bill English will get dumped from the leadership and probably leave, and current Primary Industries Minister Nathan Guy – after 12 years in Parliament and with the prospect of a long stint on the opposition benches -- may well head off to greener pastures.
