Last years' winner, Ben Burgess from Kamo, is now half way through his first year at university in Palmerston North and said being awarded the scholarship was a "huge plus" for him starting out.
"The scholarship greatly helped me getting started with uni," Burgess says.
"So far my studies are all going well. It is lots of work but good fun and I am enjoying the papers I picked as they are things I am interested in. The scholarship really helped me to get set up - I bought a lap top and the gear need for it, along with the text books I needed. Knowing that I already had the money available at the start of the year really helped take the stress out of it all," he said.
Application forms are available by telephoning the Whangarei Agricultural & Pastoral Society on (09) 438 3109, calling at the office at 127 Bank St, Whangarei or can be downloaded from www.summershow.co.nz .
The application form is simple and the process easy to follow. The scholarship is open to students who are contemplating or who are already participating in agricultural based studies. They must live (or usually live) within the boundaries of the Whangarei District Council region or be a member (or member's child) of any of the Northern District Agricultural and Pastoral Societies. Entries close on September 31, following which entrants will be invited to attend a short interview in November. The successful candidate will receive their first payment of $2,500 when they are accepted by the agricultural institution of their choice.
Whangarei A&P Society has been providing the agricultural scholarship for 10 years as a demonstration of its commitment to promoting, supporting and motivating the rural sector. The society recognises that financial considerations can stop keen, motivated candidates from entering the agricultural sector, and began the scholarship to address this.
