VIC cows make good money in the North Island

Written by

The North Island store cattle market has come off the boil in general, apart from in calf cows and heifers. Good traditional in calf cows in the paddock are around $1000-1100/hd. R3yr heifers are $1100-1200/hd. With pregnancy rates high this season, more older in calf cows have hit the market. Prices have generally been $700-800/hd. At Stortford and the Feilding in calf heifer and cow fair, prices were fairly similar.

Weaner prices have taken a tumble in the past two weeks. Weaner steers are more like $2.70/kg around the North Island while $2.50/kg for heifers is common. Weaner bull prices are holding, along with the bull market in general. There is plenty of demand for even R2yr bulls however there are not many on quote. R2yr steers and heifers have been struggling, with prices down 5-10c/kg over the past two weeks. Vendors are still pushing for $2.20/kg for 450kg steers, but they tend to be moving at $2.10-2.15/kg. Heifer prices have come back, more so at the saleyards than in the paddock. Heifers in the paddock are still fetching $2.05-2.10/kg, while at auction some have been picked up for less than $2.00/kg.
