No sign of life in lamb prices yet

Lamb kill numbers are just showing signs of declining. But unlike in the beef market, farmgate prices are not feeling too much upward pressure.

The lamb kill is still just higher than normal and meat company margins remain under pressure with the main overseas markets still lacklustre. As a result lamb prices have remained steady with most reported in the $5.55-5.65/kg range (gross incl wool/pelt/presentation etc). Companies may well be prepared to reduce capacity rather than chase harder for lamb in the short term.
