Bumper dairy production season

Written by

A bumper production season for NZ and Australian dairy farmers has been great for farm incomes, but has also put some downward pressure on market prices.

The New Zealand milk production season has come to an end while Australia is close behind with their new season commencing a month later in July. Recent statistics from DCANZ (Dairy Companies Association of New Zealand) shows that New Zealand milk production in March was 1.7 million tonnes, 9.1% higher than March 2011. Milk production for the first 10 months of the 2011-12 season is now up 9.7% at 17.46 million tonnes. It is still expected that milk production for the entire season will be at least 9% over last season.

Australian milk production in March was 2.9% higher than March 2011 at 666 million litres, with season to date milk production now ahead of last season by 4.1%. It is expected that milk production for the Australian season will end up about 4% above last season's levels.
