Safer yards a must

Cattleyards rank second on ACC's list of dangerous places on farms.

So says Te Pari Products, whose staff have found hundreds of yards that were not entirely safe and had the potential to cause serious injury or even kill.

So the company is moving to make operators aware and able to identify problems like pinch points, protrusions or poorly locking gates.

It has developed a website to help famers assess the safety of their yards via an easy-to-do online questionnaire that asks 15 thought provoking questions and helps the user identify dangerous areas in their yards; upon completion the site emails the respondent a single page report that prioritises the issues that need addressing.

The site is free to use and also contains useful links to H&S information provided by the government and other industry providers.
