Another reason not to kill the goose that laid the golden egg: Stats NZ says we achieved a rare July trade surplus of $85 million this year, thanks to a recovery in dairy export prices.

July months are typically deficits; this is the first July surplus since 2012 ($98m) and only the eleventh July surplus since 1960, says Stats NZ.

And yet some want to reduce the number of cows and clip the wings of dairying.
