DWN has finger on the pulse

HOW TO reach a level of performance that matches medal winning athletics and world champion sports teams will be discussed at the Dairy Women’s Network annual conference in March 2014.

The two-day conference at Claudelands Event Centre, Hamilton, on March 19 and 20, is themed ‘Keeping your finger on the pulse’.

Keynote speakers include Hamilton sports psychologist David Galbraith who has worked with the Chiefs rugby team and Magic netball team, and Olympic silver medal winner Sarah Walker.

Keynote closing speaker Darryl Sabin will tell his story ‘Get busy living’, recounting his recovery from a serious brain injury suffered during a rugby match. His recovery saw him overcome challenges medical experts thought were impossible. His dream had been to become an All Black.

Sabin will draw five lessons on dealing with the challenges life inevitably puts in our path.

Also speaking will be ASB chief executive Barbara Chapman and Maury Leyland, the Fonterra group director of strategy in the office of the chief executive.

“Maury has had a diverse and interesting career journey,” says Dairy Women’s Network executive chair Michelle Wilson.

“She was a member of the design team for Team New Zealand during the successful 1995 America’s Cup campaign. She is incredibly accomplished and will share her inspiring story.”

The conference is chiefly intended to give dairy farming women the latest information on farming business, animals and people, from prioritising wellbeing to developing a leadership style, Wilson says.

“Increasingly farmers must be involved in more areas of our businesses and ensure we are… exceeding expectations, from managing stock to best practice in environmental compliance.

“This year’s conference will hear from inspirational people… and from some who have hit rock bottom and worked their way back up.”

Eight workshops will include HR practices, business strategy, animal health and making sure stock are the ideal weight, and personal wellbeing – how to look after yourself and your mates.

The third Dairy Woman of the Year award winner will be announced at the conference gala dinner. The winner will take part in the ‘Women in Leadership’ 12-month programme run by Global Women, a prize valued at $25,000. The award is sponsored by Fonterra Milk Supply.
