Mower conditioner still running to speed

Written by

EUROPEAN-MADE SIP 800 triple mower-conditioners, after two seasons, are still running up to speed for Waikato business Reymer Ag Contractors, reports the distributor Webbline.

“We mow about 2000ha per season,” says Reymer spokesman Chris Reymer. “They follow the ground contour well, even in the most challenging conditions, resulting in an excellent cutting job without too much scalping or untidy cutting.”

Reymer says the mowers are user friendly and simple to operate with no electronics. All the control is via a monitor on the firm’s Fendt 818 which is averaging 28L/h diesel consumption.

“One feature I appreciate about the mowers is the shear pin disc protection system; when a foreign object hits a mower module, there are four brass pins that shear off protecting the driveline and the rest of the module from damage.”

This takes about 20 minutes to fix and costs about $20. They have only had to replace one set of pins this season, contrasting with mowers in the past that would have cost about $600 for a new module and two hours downtime.

Meanwhile, Southland dairy farmer D’Jeffery Schouten runs a set of straight double mowers. He says the SIP 380 Silvercut rear mower gives extra width, coupled with the standard 3m front mount.

“We find them easy to drive. I was running them on a Deutz K110, which is only 110hp and have now also bought a new Deutz TTV430 (132hp) which handles the set-up no problem.”

Todd Portmann, near Ashburton, has similar comments. He and his wife Sarah sharemilk 2200 cows on 590ha for Alistair and Bernadette Morrison.  He bought a SIP Silvercut 380 last season and says it is well built compared with other mowers.

“We are now doing a lot of pre-mowing in front of the cows and I wanted a mower with a decent cutting width.  The Silvercut 380 floats well and is easy to drive. I am running it on my John Deere 6330 (105hp) and it handles it no problem.”
