New Zealand apple and pear industry stakeholders are out in force for the annual conference in Queenstown.
Growers, exporters, researchers, government representatives and industry partners alike have gathered to discuss the challenges and opportunities that are shaping the sector’s future.
The first day of the two-day conference yesterday featured a packed programme of speakers and panel discussions covering topics including research and development, innovation, biosecurity, and what’s likely in the future for New Zealand’s apple and pear growers.
NZAPI’s annual general meeting was also held on day one of the conference, with the organisation announcing the re-election of two directors – Adrienne Sharp, T&G Global, and Cameron Taylor, Taylor Corp – and the election of new director Ross Wilson, Sunpeach Orchard.
Chair Andrew Gibbs also thanked outgoing director and former chair Lesley Wilson for her leadership and service after seven years on the board.
NZAPI chief executive Danielle Adsett said the strong attendance and engagement demonstrated the industry’s commitment to continuous improvement and collaboration.
“It’s been fantastic to see so many people from across the industry come together to share ideas, challenge thinking and focus on the future of New Zealand apples and pears. The calibre of discussion today reflects the sophistication of our sector and the determination of growers and industry leaders to continue building a world-class industry.”
Conference delegates heard from a range of national and international speakers, with discussions highlighting both the opportunities and challenges facing growers in an increasingly complex operating environment.
Luca Lovatti, R&D Manager at Melinda Consortium, shared fascinating insights and tales of unique problem solving from Italy’s north, while Ministry for Primary Industries’ chief insights officer Jarred Mair gave growers a snapshot of the future of the AI.
Adsett said one of the greatest strengths of the conference was the opportunity for people to connect and learn from one another.
“Our industry succeeds when we share knowledge, challenge assumptions and work together. The conference provides a valuable opportunity to strengthen those connections and ensure we’re collectively focused on a strong future for New Zealand growers.”
