South Island store cattle market in limbo

Written by

The store cattle market the south island has been relatively quiet this week. There have been one or two private sales of weaner calves but even this market is slowing down.

While some traders are down to their winter stocking rates there are still good numbers of buyers looking which would normally keep the market for older cattle active. However the favourable season is working against them. This is because most of the older cattle have come through the summer and autumn period in a lot better condition than previous years. The added weight and condition means many of these cattle will head straight to the works if they haven’t already rather than through the store sales. This is limiting buyers options right now. The fact that most regions still have good feed levels is also delaying or preventing cattle from showing up in the store markets. The market should get a good test this week with yardings lifting at a number of sale centres.
