South Island store cattle market firm

Written by

The store cattle market in the South Island is still fairly buoyant in comparison to the lamb job seeing the outlook appears more promising.

We are well and truly into winter now which has left many farmers in lock down mode. There is still demand for store cattle despite being in the middle of winter, but no one is getting ahead of themselves. Many have overestimated the amount of surplus feed on hand Crops have not been yielding as good and the snow has also done a bit of damage as of late.

There are very few cattle being traded in the paddock, with farmers choosing to send them to the saleyards. Throughput dropped dramatically this week for both prime and store cattle as farmers are not prepared to get onto the NAIT band wagon just yet. As NAIT became mandatory on Sunday sale tallies around the country have been extremely low and these smaller sales are expected to continue through until spring.
