The bad news continues for dairy farmers with the GDT price index seeing yet another drop at the latest dairy auction.

Global dairy prices continue their downward slide, with last night's auction seeing the average price index drop 1.3% to US$2,409/MT.

Last night's Global Dairy Trade auction saw the average price index fall for the fourth consecutive time, dropping 3.5% to US$2,515.

After an encouraging rise, then fall, in dairy product prices in the first quarter of this year, milk producers and manufacturers are again looking for the upside as planning for next season is either well underway or done for most. 

Federated Farmers say the 8.8% drop in the Global Dairy Trade yesterday will be disappointing to New Zealand dairy farmers but it is important not to jump to conclusions.

After an uninspiring ten months, the start of 2015 has understandably created a great deal more optimism on the sellers’ side of global dairy markets. 

The drought has sent the UN's Food and Agriculture Organisation's dairy price index soaring.
