SOME 70 FIELD workers are out in Whangarei setting additional traps to lure any Queensland fruit flies that may be in the area.

HORTICULTURE NEW Zealand says it is unbelievable and unexpected that the country is faced with another Queensland fruit fly detection, so soon after the last one in January.

Ministry for Primary Industries border staff were shocked last week by a passenger arriving in Auckland with two crates of fresh mango – which carry a high risk of hosting Queensland fruit fly. 

The fruit fly is one of the biggest risks to our horticultural industry.
