Major Parties to Debate Farming Policy Ahead of Election
Leading figures from the major political parties will be questioned on their primary sector policies at the Rural Issues Debate at Mystery Creek Events Centre, Hamilton, on 30 September.
MP for Rangitīkei Suze Redmayne sprang into action after Tirrell Winderburn, the stock manager on her family farm, found himself unable to access his KiwiSaver to buy his first home.
Redmayne introduced a member's bill that has now become government legislation, fixing two rules that have kept rural Kiwis from accessing the same first home withdrawal options as other New Zealanders.
The changes recognise the reality of farm ownership in New Zealand and put rural workers on a level playing field with other first home buyers.
The move will do no harm to National as its fights for the rural vote this election.
