Stihl Launches BT140, Its First Battery-Powered Auger
With battery tools becoming more widespread and more importantly, productive and reliable, it was only time before we saw augers or post-hole borers.
The company was founded by Nicolaus Otto, the inventor of the four-stroke internal combustion engine, and his partner Eugen Langen on 31 March 1864. It began as N. A. Otto & Cie, later renamed to Gasmotoren-Fabrik Deutz after moving operations in 1869, from Cologne to Deutz, on the opposite side of the River Rhine.
In the early years, Otto and Langen were interested only in producing stationary engines, not automobiles, employing at the time, as technical director, Gottlieb Daimler, who went on to become a famous name in automobiles.
Deutz AG and TAFE Motors, who have recently parted way with its long-term partner AGCO, have jointly launched a production collaboration for a Deutz engine production facility with capacity to produce 35,000 engines annually, at TAFE Motors manufacturing plant in Rajasthan. Under the licensing agreement, TAFE Motors will manufacture Deutz-licensed 2.2L and 2.9L engines for both domestic and international markets. The facility with also have capacity to manufacture 50,000 subassemblies.
Deutz’s chief executive officer Dr. Sebastian Schulte spoke positively about the launch of the facility.

TAFE Motors and Tractors Limited (TMTL) is a subsidiary of Tractors and Farm Equipment Limited (TAFE), one of the largest tractor manufacturers in India by volume. TAFE chair and managing director, Mallika Srinivasan, says TAFE and the Amalgamations Group, are together one of India’s largest engine manufacturing ecosystems, with a production capacity projected to expand from 400,000 to 550,000 engines annually by 2030.

“This venture will also be a growth catalyst for allied engineering industries in Rajasthan further strengthening the state’s position as a manufacturing hub."
The TAFE-Deutz facility is said to integrate high levels of automation across manufacturing, testing and logistics, with the production facility set to have a 40% female workforce, as the company advances its gender diversity goals.
