Old mate reckons the return on levies over the last half century have been below expectations, particularly DINZ, in his opinion, and he'd rather see the coin stay in farmers' pockets.
He notes that despite the millions spent on initiatives like Cervena and P2P, in the last 25 or so years, deer farmer numbers have shrunk from 4500 to 1500 and the annual kill has dropped from some 800,000 to a bit over 300,000.
Opinion swings both ways on this one, but as always, farmers get the final say when they vote on keeping, or dropping, the levy.
