CONVERTING A beef property to a robotic dairy while operating a diversified farming business down the road has made life hectic for young Tasmanians Marcus and Zed Crowden.

Fonterra welcomes the decision of the Commerce Commission to approve the acquisition of the assets of the New Zealand Dairies Ltd group in South Canterbury.

Fonterra has gained Commerce Commission clearance to acquire the dairy processing assets of New Zealand Dairies Limited (in receivership). New Zealand Dairies processes raw milk at its Studholme factory near Waimate.

"Comparing the acquisition by Fonterra to the scenario where another bidder would acquire NZDL's assets, the commission is satisfied that the acquisition would not be likely to result in a substantial lessening of competition," says Commerce Commission chair Dr Mark Berry.

FONTERRA EXPECTS the current squeeze in global milk supply to lift dairy prices in coming months. 

Fonterra has welcomed the Commerce Commission's release of its final report on the dry run review of how Fonterra sets its farm gate milk price.

Fonterra's record end-of-season quarter has been the cooperative's biggest ever May, June, and July – with 620,000 metric tonnes of dairy products loaded on ships for export to over 100 markets around the world.

The first whole milk powder has rolled off the processing line at Fonterra's new $200 million manufacturing site near Darfield in Canterbury and are bound for South East Asia, China and the Middle East.

Fonterra's $45 million tanker fleet upgrade is the biggest build in the cooperative's history.

A SHARE trading scheme for Fonterra farmers has passed the parliamentary hurdle. However, some farmers are unhappy with the Government’s refusal to put a legislative cap on the co-op’s proposed shareholders fund.
