Risky business
OPINION: In the same way that even a stopped clock is right twice a day, economists sometimes get it right.
According to said report, "Environmental measures for agriculture should not be a simplistic debate that centres on the need to cull the national herd".
"Government should fund technology and measures to reduce livestock emissions... with this funding ringfenced for direct spending on emissions reduction technology."
One might assume that this report was a summation of the recent He Waka Eke Noa consultation meetings.
But no, it actually came from a recent Irish agriculture select committee hearing into reducing farming emissions.
The hearing was told that the lack of a dedicated fund will leave Irish farmers with unachievable emission targets and costs to meet.
