James Blair Named 2026 Young Grower National Champion
James Blair, an agronomist for AS Wilcox and the Pukekohe regional champion, has won the 2026 Young Grower national title.
Alistair Petrie and Doug Brown, both successfully offered themselves for re-election and have returned uncontested.
“We’re pleased to welcome both Alistair and Doug back to the Board,” says HortNZ chair Bernadine Guilleux.
“Both have served on the Board for the past three years and bring valuable grower perspective, governance experience and commitment to the sector.
“The HortNZ Board provides key strategic direction on issues affecting growers and the wider horticulture sector, one of New Zealand’s leading primary sector earners and a vital source of fresh fruit and vegetables for New Zealanders.”
The latest Ministry for Primary Industries Situation and Outlook for Primary Industries report reinforces the sector’s importance, forecasting horticulture export revenue to increase seven per cent to $9.5 billion in the year to 30 June 2026 and grow to more than $9.7 billion the following year.
“Together with Government, industry, Māori and science partners, the sector aims to double the farmgate value of horticulture production by 2035,” says Guilleux.
“The HortNZ Board and team are focused on advocating for practical policy settings for growers that strengthen biosecurity, improve access to crop protection tools, cut red tape, ensure enduring water security, build a skilled workforce, support fair grocery markets and invest in critical infrastructure.
“By backing growers and removing unnecessary barriers, New Zealand can strengthen its food system, support regional growth and ensure horticulture continues to contribute to wellbeing, regional economies and export growth.”
Directors are elected for a term of three years, with the new term beginning after the Horticulture New Zealand Incorporated Annual General Meeting on 28 July 2026.
