Fonterra chairman Henry van der Heyden has announced his intention to step down in a year's time.

He made the announcement at today's Fonterra annual general meeting at Whangarei. Van der Heyden will hand over to an as-yet-unnamed successor at the 2012 AGM.

Van der Heyden's retirement as chairman will follow on from the recent replacement of CEO, with Theo Spierings replacing Andrew Ferrier.
