The article made a huge hullabaloo about the fact 13 meat companies had claimed a total $101 million to support the wages of 13,552 meat workers.
The Herald intimated, without any proof, that these ‘offending’ meat companies had basically gamed the system and should pay the money back.
However, the Hound observed that the very same article made no mention of the fact the NZME itself had claimed some $10 million in subsidy to cover 1500 employees and – unlike the meat companies – had also sacked another 250 during the Covid crisis.
It seems it is okay for the NZ Herald’s owners to claim the subsidy, but not meat companies. No wonder the company is going down the gurgler!
