Cat S60’s thermal eye

Written by  Mark Daniel
Cat S60. Cat S60.

Caterpillar Inc in New Zealand is to sell a range of rugged smartphones said to be tough, durable and purpose made for construction, agriculture or the tough outdoors.

Leading the range is the Cat S60, the world’s only smartphone with an integrated thermal camera that can detect heat and measure surface temperatures from a distance of 30m. The thermal imager can also detect heat loss around windows and doors, spot moisture and missing insulation, identify overheating electrical appliances and circuitry and see in complete darkness.

The Cat S60 is drop-proof to 1.8m and waterproof to 5m for one hour. It has a super-bright display that can be viewed in bright sunlight and the touchscreen can be controlled with wet fingers or while wearing gloves.

Cat’s confidence in the unit includes a market leading guarantee against screen damage: if a user manages to accidently damage or break the Gorilla Glass screen within the first 24 months of purchase the company will repair or replace the screen.

Then there’s the Cat S31 and Cat S41 models, also made to survive. Specifications include in IP68 water and dust proof and US Military SPEC 810G Certification.

At the heart of the Cat S41 is a huge 5000mAh battery good for 44 days standby time without charging. This is said to be powerful enough to charge other mobile devices and accessories such as Bluetooth speakers via its battery share function that turns your phone into a power bank.
