Milk choc in hot water

OPINION: Whittaker's decision to introduce te reo Maori on its milk chocolate packaging is causing ripples in the political arena.

Greens' co-leader Marama Davidson has been criticised for breaking cabinet rules when she posted images of the Whittakers blocks which have been branded with te reo for creamy milk - Miraka Kirimi.

The post could arguably be seen as promoting a product - something that is a breach of the Cabinet Manual.

But Davidson isn't having a bar of it. She's not pulling her posts down, although she did edit them after a stern word from the PM.

Introducing te reo Maori to its packaging, on the surface, should be a win for Whittaker's chocolate. After all, it is one of the country's two official languages. But the backlash to the decision shows it is not so simple.

Some people are boycotting the product.
