2026-27 Fishing Season Opens Across New Zealand

The new season’s licence. The new season’s licence.

New Zealand's 2026-27 freshwater fishing season has opened, with anglers encouraged to head to rivers and lakes over the coming days as conditions look favourable across much of the country.

Fish & Game New Zealand chief operating officer Richie Cosgrove said trout in many waterways hadn't been fished for months.

"There is every reason to be excited, and plenty of opportunity to get out on the water," Cosgrove said.

Cosgrove said fishing offered benefits well beyond the catch itself.

"Fishing is great for body and mind. It is hard to dwell on your worries when your attention is on a trout at the end of the line. It is also a great way to spend time with whanau and friends, get some wild kai on the table, teach kids new skills, and pass on a love of the outdoors."

He said the sport remains accessible regardless of budget. "You do not need the latest and greatest gear to enjoy fishing. With a licence and some basic equipment, you can easily get started without spending a fortune."

Cosgrove encouraged families to make the most of the school holidays, pointing out that many regions have kid-friendly fishing spots within walking or biking distance of main centres.

Children under 12 can fish for free, though they still need a licence. Anglers aged 12 to 17 can buy a whole season licence for $31.

Fish & Game has launched a new Fishing Knowledge Hub, an online resource bringing together guides on where to fish, choosing gear, reading the water, and techniques spanning spin, fly and boat fishing, along with advice on preparing a catch for the table and a growing library of how-to videos.

"Whether you are picking up a rod for the first time or you have fished our rivers and lakes for years, the Hub has something for you," Cosgrove said. "It is everything you need for freshwater fishing in New Zealand, all in one place."

Cosgrove noted New Zealand ranks among the world's best trout fishing destinations. "It is world-class fishing, and it is right on our doorstep. We look forward to seeing people out on the water this season."

Whole season licences are available online and from accredited sports shops and other outlets, with licences and the Fishing Knowledge Hub both accessible at fishandgame.org.nz.
