Retro Kiwi milkbars storming China

Written by

A string of 1950s-style milkbars serving Kiwi dairy milkshakes, smoothies and yogurt is reckoned a smash hit in China.

The New Zealand Milk Bar brand is unknown in its home country, but its owner Biopure Health, Auckland, opened its 50th China store in Shanghai last month and plans to have 1000 outlets up and running by late 2017. The two-level, 330m flagship store has a retro milkbar counter, and a retail department selling milk products from NZ companies, including infant formula and milk powder. The business started five years ago, following the 2008 incident in which thousands of Chinese were hospitalised after drinking melamine-tainted milk.
